王旭东,字晓阳。原籍山东夏津县,1952年2月出生于河北省邯郸市。大专文化,1969年下乡插队,1977年专业从事文化宣传工作。1988年3月被吸收为中国书法家协会会员;,2002年被省文化厅评为群文系列书法专业正高职研究馆员。2016年当选中国硬笔书法协会理事兼行书委员会副主任;为中国文联书画艺术交流中心理事;中国教育学会书法教育研究会会员;中国文化艺术发展促进会会员;中国书画名家研究院副院长;河北省人大文化促进会常务理事;河北省书协1至4届理事、5届主席团委员;河北省诗词协会会员;河北省硬笔书协副主席、邯郸市书法家协会名誉主席;市硬笔书法家协会主席;邯郸市邯山区政协四、五届常委;邯郸市政协书画院副院长;赵都书画艺术研究院院长、山东省书画研究院教授。自1982年担任文化宫宣传科长,1983年受邯郸市文联委托,文化宫委派负责筹建市书法家协会,担任协会秘书长、副主席兼秘书长共4届27年。50余次策划组织本市及跨省市大型书画活动,举办各类书画班近百期,搭建各种职工文化活动平台,为本市培养、扶植出一大批书画艺术人才。

Wang
Xudong, courtesy name Xiaoyang, was born in February 1952 in Handan
City, Hebei Province, with ancestral roots in Xiajin County, Shandong. A
college-educated individual, he began rural re-education in 1969 and
transitioned to cultural promotion work in 1977. In March 1988, he
became a member of the China Calligraphers Association. Recognized by
the Provincial Department of Culture in 2002 as a Senior Researcher in
Calligraphy under the Mass Cultural Series. His career milestones
include: 2016 election as Council Member and Deputy Director of the
Running Script Committee at the China Hard Pen Calligraphy Association;
Council Member of the China Federation of Literary and Art Circles
’Calligraphy Exchange Center; membership in the Chinese Education
Society’s Calligraphy Education Research Association and the China
Cultural Development Promotion Association; Vice President of the
Chinese Calligraphy Masters Research Institute; Standing Council Member
of Hebei Provincial People’s Congress Cultural Promotion Association;
Council Member (1st-4th terms) and Chairman (5th term) of Hebei
Calligraphers Association; member of Hebei Poetry Society; Vice Chairman
of Hebei Hard Pen Calligraphy Association and Honorary Chairman of
Handan Calligraphers Association; Chairman of Handan Hard Pen
Calligraphers Association; Standing Committee Member (4th-5th terms) of
Handan CPPCC Standing Committee; Vice President of Handan CPPCC
Calligraphy and Painting Institute; Dean of Zhao Du Calligraphy and
Painting Art Research Institute; and Professor at Shandong Calligraphy
and Painting Research Institute. Since 1982, he served as Director of
the Propaganda Department at the Cultural Palace. Commissioned by Handan
Federation of Literary and Art Circles in 1983, he spearheaded the
establishment of the city’s Calligraphers Association, holding positions
as Secretary-General and Vice Chairman for four consecutive terms
spanning 27 years. He has organized over 50 large-scale local and
interprovincial calligraphy events, conducted nearly 100 workshops, and
cultivated numerous artistic talents through cultural platforms. His
works and biography have been featured in over 40 publications including
"99’ China Top 100 Calligraphers and Painters Anthology". In 2004, he
held a grand solo calligraphy exhibition at Handan City Museum. In 1985,
he received the Provincial Calligraphers Association’s Outstanding
Creation Award and was honored with the Municipal Cultural
Revitalization Award from 1990 to 2000. In 1996, he participated in the
"First Ruzi Niu Cup Calligraphy and Painting Competition" organized by
the China Calligraphers Association and China Artists Association. In
1999, he was awarded the "Nine-Nine Hundred Outstanding Calligraphers"
title by the China Federation of Literary and Art Circles. In 2001, he
received the "Provincial Outstanding Social Organization Worker" award
from Hebei Provincial Civil Affairs Department. In 2002, he was
recognized as an "Outstanding Individual for Cultural and Scientific
Outreach to Rural Areas" by the Hebei Provincial Party Committee
Propaganda Department. In 2006, he won the "Yanzhao Star Award First
Prize" from Hebei Provincial Department of Culture. In 2008, he was
nominated as a "China Intellectual Property Ambassador" by the National
Intellectual Property Administration and was selected for the "Top 100
Famous Calligraphers’ Intellectual Property Excellence Works". That same
year, he received the "30th Anniversary Outstanding Achievement
Commemorative Award" from the National Museum of China and was exhibited
in the "30th Anniversary of China’s Reform and Opening-up Art
Achievements Exhibition". In March 2011, he attended the calligraphy and
painting symposium organized by the State Council Legislative Affairs
Office, with his works being collected. From March to July 2013, he
initiated the Handan Hard Pen Calligraphers Association and was awarded
the "Advanced Individual" title by the Hebei Hard Pen Calligraphers
Association. In 2015, he received the "Role Model Figure" honor from the
association and the "Advanced Social Science Work Individual"
certificate from Handan Municipal Social Sciences Federation. In 2018,
he personally guided the first cohort of calligraphy high school
students from the city’s art high school into university studies,
earning him the Outstanding Contributor Award from the Hebei Hard Pen
Calligraphers Association. In 2022, Wang Xudong was honored with the
title of "Master of Chinese National Gift Art" by the China Traditional
Culture Development Committee. In March 2024, he was appointed as a
special art consultant by CCTV’s "Art Masters" program. His calligraphy
works were appraised by the Cultural Market Art Exchange Center under
the Ministry of Culture in 2011, valued at 7,000-8,000 yuan per square

人生是一个过程,艺术探索也是一个过程,一旦踏上艺术探索之路,并真心诚意要在艺术之海里遨游,你就會看到我們中华民族传统的文化艺术宝库是多麽博大精深,無数的艺术精英以他们出众的才华,构成了我们今天看到的传统艺术海洋,在这个大海中,此岸看到彼岸好,这山望着那山高,人的追求就是在這种不断求变化求发展中前進的。探求多元化之路是当今世界思想开放与時俱进的表现,也符合生命不止,探索不休,艺海无涯的规律,我不希望我的书法停留在某种套路之中,也不希望过早被人认为是形成什么風格,即一看就知是xxx的字,其实我认为那只能算在艺术大海里游上一瑰礁石再也游不动了罢了。清末康南海曾云:吾眼有神,吾腕有鬼。此种心态我辈亦然,人人追求完美,完美总在前方,也可能终生都有遗憾,学艺真如逆水行舟,不进则退。我钦佩那些银幕上被视为性格演员的艺术家,他们以自己的才华尽可能多的向世人展现多种性格的美,而不愿像本色演员一样,終生只有一种戏路。
继承传统广临百家,潜心揣摩古人典范之作,笔墨技巧熟练後,创作其实就是在写修养、找不同感觉,写胸中日常认识和积累。如唱戏,你可以立足于某一类角色或行当,但也可去了解探索表现诸如小生、花旦、老生、黑頭、花脸之类,因为他们都是可以給人以美感的艺术形象,书法创作亦应如此。

Words of a Calligrapher Author: Wang Xudong
The
pursuit of art is a collective endeavor for humanity, and the treasury
of artistic heritage is a shared treasure of mankind. Inheriting and
advancing traditional Chinese culture and arts is the responsibility of
every art explorer. While individual talents may vary, as long as one
dedicates themselves wholeheartedly to enriching our cultural legacy
through creativity and diligence, they will have lived a meaningful
life. I deeply admire the Russian fable writer Krylov’s wisdom: "As for
me, I was born to work for the public good. I never sought to claim
credit for my deeds. My only solace lies in hoping to see a drop of
honey from my own hive within our collective nest." Life is a journey,
and artistic exploration is equally profound. Once you embark on this
path with genuine dedication, you’ll discover how vast and intricate our
nation’s cultural heritage truly is. Countless masters have shaped
today’s artistic landscape through their exceptional talents. In this
ocean of tradition, we admire distant shores while pursuing new vistas –
human aspirations thrive through constant evolution and innovation.
Embracing diverse approaches reflects our world’s openness to progress,
aligning with the timeless principle that "life never ceases,
exploration never stops, and the sea of art knows no bounds." I refuse
to confine my calligraphy to rigid formulas or be prematurely labeled as
having a signature style – like instantly recognizable as "xxx’s work."
Such labels merely mark a reef in the vast ocean of art, where true
navigation requires continuous exploration. As Kang Nanhai (1876-1948)
famously said: "My eyes behold divine visions; my hands wield artistic
wonders." This mindset resonates with us all. We relentlessly pursue
perfection, yet it remains elusive, often leaving lifelong regrets.
Mastering an art form is like rowing upstream – if you don’t advance,
you retreat. I admire screen artists who embody the concept of
"character actors" (xingren xingzai), using their talents to showcase
diverse character beauty rather than being confined to a single role
like traditional actors. By inheriting traditions and studying ancient
masters’ works, we refine our skills. True creation lies in cultivating
artistic cultivation, discovering unique sensibilities, and expressing
accumulated life experiences. Like opera performance, one can specialize
in a particular role type while exploring diverse artistic expressions –
Xiaosheng (young male roles), Huadan (flower maiden roles), Laosheng
(senior male roles), Heitou (dark-faced roles), and Hualian
(painted-face roles) – each offering distinct aesthetic appeal.
Calligraphy creation should follow this principle.
